- Soooo ….. Don Fehr wants to play games, huh ? What a worm. And what an insult to the common folk that drive and fund the game of hockey. Travel schedule of an NHL player is too hard on them ? Flying everywhere executive class and staying in 5 star hotels is too hard on the players ? …. Hmmmm ….. any notion that the union cares about the playoff structure is laughable. The union management care only about how many zeroes are tacked on behind the first digits of their paycheque. If you don’t think so, then have a few discussions with them … look, we all know what Fehr is doing. Anything he can use to disrupt the NHL, he is going to use. Regardless of how unethical, immoral, unreasonable or wrong it is. He will do it. That is what labour lawyers do. They screw people around. They are greedy, and manipulative. Yup, just like many owners / businessmen. No sense being naïve here. The big issue with the union / labour lawyer is that they misrepresent themselves, claiming to be “ fighting for the worker “ … whatever. They don’t care about anything except their own wealth. Which is funny, since that is what they criticize the business owner for. The team owners here are not pretending to be something they are not – they all want to make millions. Fair enough. And they happen to make all the players rich in the process. Fine. But what the nhlpa are doing, that isn’t fine. The tail wants to wag the dog. They want to keep making more money, more millions for the likes of Scott Gomez, Jeff Finger, Jason Blake, and other slackers …. At the cost of the fan. Now the nhlpa want to tell the NHL how to run their business. They want to run the league, too, huh ? Tell the league owners how to organize the conferences or divisions? How to schedule the games? Here is a word to the NHL owners – crush this union. Crush it hard. Destroy it. As a fan, it disgusts me what the nhlpa does, and what it stands for. Selfishness. Greed. Entitlement. Zero accountability. NHL players make so much money now, and have such an easy life of privilege and wealth, that they can’t even be bothered to put on the Canada Cup, or World Cup, call it what you want, the tournament formerly held to raise money for the players pension fund, and followed fanatically by the fanatical fans, like me. Open Ice Hitter has been calling for this tournament for years, but the players and their agents are too busy counting their money …… things are way out of whack in sports unions. Lets get things straightened out. Put the players union in its place. Time for performance based pay, and destruction of the nhlpa. When the lawyers and agents who run the nhlpa have brainwashed veteran players so badly into going along with the idea that first class travel and 5 star hotels create too hard of a life, then it is time for a reality check. |

ROSTER MAKEOVERS - JULY 1ST STYLE The foolishness quotient was way up for Free Agency Friday 2011. After a couple years of somewhat subdued spending, in which GM’s looked like they were understanding the idea of fiscal responsibility , not inflating player salaries beyond what might be called acceptable for a players performance, and generally composing themselves to a degree, everything got haywire in a hurry in 2011. Dale Tallon and his booster club in Florida may not know it, but he has already dug his grave, built his coffin, and is laying in it. Based on his past performance, it won’t be long until he figures out how to starting putting a few nails in his own coffin. In Philadelphia, Paul Holmgren gutted his team, and has really gone off on a tangent, totally changing the character and style of his team. And not in a good way. Holmgren may not realize it, but he has laid his head on the chopping block. It would not surprise in the least bit if he no longer has his job in 1 years time. Alright. Lets get into some detail. Dale Tallon and the Florida BlackHawks. Except Tallon didn’t manage to land any of the good BlackHawks. He has an overpaid blueliner in Brian Campbell. He has a third line guy who proved he is nothing more than a third line guy in Kris Versteeg. Another third liner from Chicago, Thomas Kopecky – he doesn’t even know how to do up the zippers on his hockey pants !! Yup. You are rocking it in South Florida Dale !!! He loses Tomas Vokoun and brings in Jose Theodore. Former Hart Trophy winner, don’t you know …. Sure. If ever a Hart Trophy was rigged, that was the time. Seriously. Montreal is a haven for organized crime. That could very well be the explanation for Theodore’s Hart Trophy. There sure as hell won’t be another one. Bringing in Ed Jovanovski isn’t going to hurt, and Thomas Fleischmann could be a star. But Tallon overpaid for both guys …. Yeah, the Panthers needed to spend some money. Why not spend it on Vokoun ??? Upshall and Goc are decent depth guys … Florida could make the playoffs. The bottom spots are always a crapshoot. But Tallon hasn’t done anything brilliant here …. |

It is obvious that a few players should not be in the big show. How they got there, we are not always sure. How they stay in the big league can be equally as baffling. But they are in the league, and it ruffles my feathers. Here is the black list, with the how and the why. |
